Grant Helps Rural Firefighters Gear Up for Woodland Emergencies in Chattooga County

CHATTOOGA COUNTY, Ga. — Volunteer firefighters in the Teloga community of Chattooga County are better equipped to battle woodland fires this season, thanks to a grant that funded the purchase of new safety and firefighting tools.

The Teloga Volunteer Fire Department recently received funding through the Community Mission Fund of AgGeorgia Farm Credit, a program that supports nonprofit organizations working to improve life in rural Georgia. With the award, the department replaced outdated equipment and added much-needed tools to its arsenal.

The new gear includes fire rakes, chainsaws, leaf blowers, and a gas detector — essentials for tackling fires in the rugged, heavily wooded terrain common in northwest Georgia. The tools are expected to improve response times, enhance safety for firefighters, and make firefighting operations more efficient.

“Much of our old equipment had seen years of hard use, and in some cases it slowed us down,” a Teloga firefighter said. “With these upgrades, we can do our job faster and more safely, which means a lot to the people we serve.”

AgGeorgia Farm Credit launched the Community Mission Fund in 2023 to invest in rural communities across the state. This year, the program awarded more than $53,000 to 12 organizations, with Teloga VFD among the beneficiaries.

Wildland and woodland fires can spread quickly in rural counties like Chattooga, where homes, farms, and forests often sit side by side. For small volunteer departments, the right equipment can make the difference between containing a blaze and watching it grow out of control.

Local leaders praised the grant as an example of how targeted community support can strengthen public safety. “Volunteer fire departments are the backbone of emergency response in rural Georgia,” one county official noted. “This investment ensures that our firefighters are prepared, and that our residents are better protected.”

For Teloga’s firefighters, the new gear is more than just equipment — it’s peace of mind. As one volunteer put it, “We may be small, but we’ll be ready.”
